SLOW TIME opens in Studio 10 on Saturday 29 April, daily from 10am - 5pm

Slow Time is the result of a six-month community project which recorded the passage of time during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. The project was led by Janette Kerr, in collaboration with John Gammans, and supported by SAW. It features long-exposure photographs of the Somerset landscape and other locations, created using drink cans that were made into pinhole cameras. As light slowly seeps in to form an image, the sun’s elevation is recorded as an accumulation of lines that arch and streak across the images, creating an almost ghostly landscape.

More than 100 people placed over 150 pinhole cameras around Somerset, leaving them for approximately five to six months. Over the long time-frame, the effects of the environment, such as rain and other elemental detritus, led to surprising and uncontrollable marks appearing within the images. You will also notice the absence of moving objects, including people, animals and cars, a unique and eerie effect created by the long exposure time. No chemicals are required in the development process - the images have been solely shaped by the environment and shifting elevation of the sun in relation to the passing of the seasons.
